Under 13 Surrey Development Squad Assessments for 2015/16
This is to advise you of the dates for the Under 13 assessments for this season and the process that is being used. Also to ask for your co-operation in trying to ensure that one of the assessments dates are left clear from club or school activities in order to allow the boys nominated to attend.
This programme involves approximately 100 boys in 3 regional centres within the Surrey Rugby area. The purpose of the U13 programme is to give the successful boys additional coaching in order to assist in their development, which will also benefit their performance at club or school rugby. Each season Surrey Rugby hold assessments at U13 and this is used as the starting point for the Development Squad Programme.
Due to number of boys taken into the programme, further assessments are NOT held at Under 14 or Under 15, however boys who are considered suitable to join the programme will be given an opportunity to be assessed. Nominations emails will be sent to all schools and clubs that are eligible to nominate for this programme.
This process will not commence before January 2016 and once it has started the Under 13s page of the Surrey Rugby website will be updated. All nominations for this programme and all County Trials are managed by means of a computer link that will be sent to all schools and clubs by Surrey Rugby. It is important that all schools and clubs ensure that the correct contact details are held by Surrey Rugby.
The programme at Under 13 does not commence until the end of the season, the programme is run during the summer and the boys automatically move into the Under 14 programme that starts for the 2016-17 rugby season in September. It has been found that by doing this it is most beneficial for the boys, they get to train in warmer conditions and the sessions can be built around handling and core skills without the need to use contact.
As you will appreciate the number of boys that are nominated each season is very high. The result is that it is simply not possible to assess all the boys on one day. Therefore we have to hold two assessment dates, with the nominated boys attending just one of the dates, which they can choose.
With the enlargement of the programme in recent seasons, this has meant that there are also additional commitments at both Under 14 and 15, and together with current Surrey league dates, there are only 2 dates that are suitable, to ensure that sufficient coaches and assessors will be available which are:
- Sunday 3rd April 2016, Streatham and Croydon RFC
- Sunday 10th April 2016, TBC
You will appreciate that both of these dates are during the Easter School holidays, which will undoubtedly cause problems with boys being available in any event. What I would ask, is that schools and clubs look at these dates and try to ensure that when they plan tours or consider rearranging league matches etc that they aim to leave one of these dates free to allow their players to attend the assessments.
If you have any questions in relation to the assessments or the process, please do not hesitate to contact the office.
